About Us
The German Shepherd Dog Club of Charleston was founded in February 1965 and was the first German Shepherd Dog Club (GSD Club) to be established in the Carolinas. It was incorporated under South Carolina law as a non profit organization in 1968 and is still the only AKC licensed German Shepherd dog club in the tri-county area.
The GSD Club is comprised of a variety of humans and animals. While the majority of our members currently, or have previously, had the privilege of having a GSD as part of their family, many members own other breeds, such as Rottweilers, Terriers, and Chihuahuas. The GSD Club promotes the training, care, and health of all dogs with an emphasis on the characteristics associated with a GSD. Many of these characteristics apply to other breed dogs, so we encourage all dog owners to join our club.
GSD Club members meet the second Tuesday of every month to discuss upcoming activities, events, and issues. Anyone interested in learning more about the GSD Club are invited to attend any of our GSD Club meetings; no advance notice necessary.
We also participate and attend animal related events in the area with our canine family members to increase our presence in the community as well as promote the GSD breed. One of our more well known events is a socialization group know as Sundays in the Park. Experienced dog owners are also available to offer training and behavior advice to new or inexperienced owners.
